This trip was a liveaboard on the Galapagos Sky, but it wasn't your ordinary liveaboard trip either. For one, we got to go to the northern most islands of Wolf and Darwin. These islands are quite a bit further north, so they aren't visited nearly as much as the other islands. These islands also offered the most impressive shark dives on the entire trip. I saw more sharks on any one of those dives than I have seen on all my hundreds of other dives put together.

The second reason this trip was a little extra special was because everyone on the trip was diving rebreathers. This really kicked it up to the next level because the marine life doesn't get spooked by rebreather divers like they do by regular scuba divers with all of their noisy bubbles 😉. Personally, was diving a Poseidon Se7en with all of the tech upgrades. But there was a mix of rebreathers represented on the trip by various divers.

Marine Iguanas are something special that only exist in the Galapagos. They are something that sparked my interests many years ago. But, they were something that I didn't think I would ever get the chance to see in person. As you can see in the video above, I did actually get to scratch the marine iguanas off of my bucket list! The penguins in the beginning of the video were an added bonus that I didn't really expect to see in the Galapagos, but "two birds with one stone" I guess! It's amazing how many species only exist in the Galapagos!

The underwater footage was on the way back in from a 150 foot deep dive a ledge below. I didn't get a lot of video footage because they were in very shallow water and the surge was crazy, especially while trying to manage buoyancy with a rebreather and in a dry suit. I felt like I was in a tumbler up there! Never the less, I was ecstatic to see the ones that I did see!

Even though there were three dives left to do on the trip, this ended up being my last dive because I was super congested and couldn't equalize my sinuses. My sinuses actually started bleeding on this 150 foot dive. This was during the COVID pandemic and one of the requirements to get back in the United States was a negative COVID test. Well... I ended up failing that test and got stuck quarantining in Ecuador (event though I was vaccinated). I guess that was probably the cause of my sinus issues during that dive, and the reason I had to skip the last three dives.

I hope you enjoy the video. If you do, I'd appreciate it if you'd take a moment to like it and subscribe to the YouTube channel. I have a lot more videos to post, including all of the sharks from this Galapagos trip!

Greg Kjonohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13427101041549574045noreply@blogger.com0Galápagos Islands, Ecuador-0.38310591679147071 -90.423334426200284-28.693339752970317 -125.57958442620028 27.927127919387374 -55.267084426200284tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6235986065542446570.post-24798485563881553382022-07-09T17:38:00.006-04:002022-11-24T14:33:08.559-05:00Screw the Idaho Potato, Give Me Mountains!

It's kind of funny... no matter where I go in the world, people relate Idaho to the "Idaho Potato". Even while traveling throughout Asia in 2019, whenever I mentioned that I was visiting from Idaho they almost always came back with something about the "Idaho potato". Most people are actually surprised to find out that the majority of Idaho is covered with mountains! Whoever was in charge of marketing the "Idaho potato" must have done something right.

The Sawtooth National Forest in Idaho holds a special place in my heart. I truly cherish the time that I have spent there. The views are amazing, there's tons of wildlife around, the trails aren't typically overpopulated, and you're never far from a crystal clear alpine lake or mountain stream.

Another big benefit that the Sawtooth's have is the way all of their trails seem to strategically connect at just the right place. It makes it easy to carve out a loop or through-hike so that you don't have to double-back over the same trail twice.

The video above will give you some idea of what the area has to offer. But in reality, it doesn't do it justice compared to taking it all in for yourself. If you notice that some of the views in the video are kind of hazy, that's from smoke which blew in from a forest fire not too far away from there.

If the trails and beauty isn't enough, there's also some truly awesome rock climbing routes to be had as well at Elephant's Perch, which is shown around the 32 second mark in the video above. Below is a breakdown of the climbing routes at Elephant's Perch. They are mostly trad climbing, where you place your own protection as you climb using nuts and cams, as opposed to sport climbing where you clip off to bolts which are anchored in the rock.

This turns Three Sister's Spring into a snorkeling destination as people come from all over to get a glimpse of these gentle giants.

The West Indian manatee is an "imperiled species" which is protected by Florida state and federal laws. The manatees are watched pretty closely. When I was there, there were a couple FWC officers hanging out in Canoes watching people.

Look, but don't touch manatees. Also, don't feed manatees or give them water. Avoid isolating or singling out an individual manatee from its group and do not separate a cow and her calf.

Keep hands and objects to yourself. Don't attempt to snag, hook, hold, grab, pinch, hit or ride a manatee.

Avoid excessive noise and splashing if a manatee appears nearby. The manatee may be resting and may surface without being aware of your presence. Noise and activity may startle the animal awake, which may put it in harm’s way if it is frightened and leaves the area.

If the site you visit allows in-water activities near manatees, use snorkel gear and float at the surface of the water to passively observe manatees. The sound of bubbles from SCUBA gear or other devices may cause manatees to leave the area.

Greg Kjonohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13427101041549574045noreply@blogger.com0Three Sisters Springs, 601 Three Sisters Springs Trail, Crystal River, FL 34429, USA28.888582 -82.58927510.57834816382115406 -117.7455251 57.198815836178845 -47.433025099999995tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6235986065542446570.post-49506578024979036502022-07-09T09:51:00.018-04:002022-07-29T21:10:27.087-04:00Divemaster vs Master Scuba Diver...
This is something that a lot of people are often confused about it. I have heard people say they want to become a divemaster when what they really want to become is a master scuba diver, and vice versa. So, what's the difference?

A master scuba diver is the highest recreational scuba diving certification offered by PADI. It's more of an elite rank that sets you apart from other divers. This credential demands respect among other divers and proves that you are an experienced diver. Less than two percent of divers achieve this level of certification.

To become a master scuba diver you need to earn your PADI Open Water Diver certification, followed by PADI Advanced Open Water Diver and PADI Rescue Diver (or qualifying certifications). You also need to earn at least five PADI Specialty Diver certifications and have logged a minimum of 50 dives.

So, what's a divemaster then? A PADI Divemaster is the first professional level within the PADI System of diver education and allows you to:

Supervise certified divers during pleasure diving experiences

Supervise training and non-training related diving activities

Conduct dive briefings, scuba reviews, and skin diver courses

Assist in Discover Scuba Diving programs and lead additional dives

If your dream is to work on a dive boat and lead divers on their underwater adventures, then you want to be a divemaster.

Almost half of that time included at least some involvement with SolarWinds products. The last five years or so has had a rather intense focus on SolarWinds products though. I worked as a professional services engineer exclusively on SolarWinds products for a few years, and have been working as a senior monitoring engineer for a couple more years. I have even acquired five different SCP certifications as well. Over this time, I've accumulated a lot of knowledge, and a rather extensive script and query archive.

I figured its probably about time I start sharing some of this knowledge with the rest of the world, so I'm going to start posting exclusively on SolarWinds products on my new technical blog located at https://SolarWinds.GregKjono.com. It has kind of been a dumping ground for random videos over the years. I've posted videos on everything from from sky diving to scuba diving, wing eating contests to toe nail removal... There's even a cat video in there (as shown above) LOL!

Back in the day, I used to make some extra cash with YouTube's monetization program. Unfortunately, they decided to change their eligibility requirements and as a result my channel no longer met the requirements. Between that change and having some of my videos flagged as adult content (I mean really, getting a toe nail removed is restricted to 18+ years old...), I dumped a lot of the video content I had out there and I've barely posted any new videos in almost a decade now.

I do plan to change things up a little on there again though. I guess I'm finally getting over my spiteful grudge and feel like sharing some of my adventures again. My new videos will focus more on the adventure sports that I'm passionate about, like scuba diving, mountain biking, rock climbing, etc.

I actually have a lot of videos that I have yet to post... time has just been a rare commodity lately. I have countless hours of video to go through from my trips to the Galapagos, Truk Lagoon, and diving with the sea lions off of Hornby Island... just for starters.

Feel free to subscribe to my channel so you get notified when I do upload some new content!

https://www.youtube.com/c/GregKjono
Greg Kjonohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13427101041549574045noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6235986065542446570.post-3764335694393716312022-06-13T19:28:00.007-04:002022-07-09T19:46:58.399-04:00Using Multiple Instagram Accounts to Hyper-Focus on Different Aspects of LifeLike most people, I started out with a single Instagram account and my posts were kind of random. As time went on I started to see the benefit of having dedicated Instagram accounts for various aspects of my life. By splitting up my Instagram life into several accounts, people can choose to follow the parts of my life that interest them, but they don't have to get overwhelmed by topics that don't.

For example, below are the ones that I have active today. I'll likely be creating additional accounts in the future, when I have more time to manage them. It has become a place where I'll post the major highlights of my life, but I try not to post too much or too frequently about any one topic.

@GregKjono_Dives

As you may suspect, this Instagram account is focused on my underwater life. I am a technical CCR diver and a former dive professional. Now, I just dive for fun. If my diving interests people, they can follow this account and see all of my underwater adventures. I still might post a few pics here and there on my "personal" account, like from my recent trip to the Galapagos. However, the @GregKjono_Dives account will get the bulk of my underwater pics.

@run.lift.ride.climb.etc

This Instagram account follows my fitness training. I have a somewhat unique training program which is focused on strength, endurance and agility in preparation for the various adventure sports that I partake in. If I do something which is a significant life event, I might make a post to my personal account. The rest of my training, however, will end up here.

Greg Kjonohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13427101041549574045noreply@blogger.com0
